Stanley Hicks - 1911-1989
Born on North Carolina's Beech Mountain, Stanley gained international
renowned for his homemade musical instruments, his dancing and playing, and
the endless wealth of stories he kept in his head. In 1980, the North
Carolina Folklore Society presented him with is highest honor, the Brown-
Hudson Award. A federal honor followed in 1983, when he was presented
with the National Heritage Fellowship of the Folk Arts Program of the
National Endowment of the Arts.
To the people who knew him, Stanley was a part of a passing generation,
a generation of stories, music, and art that kept mountain people entertained
before the advent of modern conveniences. That generation moved a little
further into the past with his death.
